Trying to install gtk+-2.6.0

I installed pango-1.8.0 and xft-2.1.2-1.i386.rpm. Now, when I run the configure script, I get this message

I can't seem to find any info on this, so would someone know what the problem is?

see if you have xft installed.
try xft-config --prefix in a console

when you compiled pango, it didn't find xft in your PKG_CONFIG_PATH (most distros set this for you) so when you compile pango you will have to point PKG_CONFIG_PATH to point to xft.pc (which is probably in /usr/X11R6/lib/pkgconfig) like this:

export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH

make sure when ./configure is done and it prints the summary it says it found xft

try locate xft.pc to see if XFT is indeed in /usr/X11R6/lib/pkgconfig

If it's not there try www.rpmfind.net

i fixed this error by installing freetype before compiling pango

You can find XFT in: pdx.freedesktop.org/software/fontconfig/releases/

But to install it, you also need fontconfig. you can find the last release in: www.fontconfig.org

sounds to me like you've just not installed the relevant -devel packages, pango-devel, xft-devel etc...

xft comes with Xfree86/Xorg. if you do not have it then you do not have the required -devel packages for your system. You do not need to download and install additional packages to get it. If configure does not pick it up, then pkg-config is failing to find the xft.pc file and you need to adjust your PKG_CONFIG_PATH to point to it.

What does one do if /usr/X11R6/lib/pkgconfig doesn't exist ? (the only directories /usr/X11R6/lib contains are called "modules", "tls", "X11" and "xscreensaver")

there's no reason it needs to be there, you're free to provide an alternative location to the configure script if it's defaulting there. I don't think it actaully is at all, and you're just going by what other people are telling you.

basically... go find xft.pc. use "locate xft.pc" to dig it out, and that will eb the location to pass to configure, but it'll often find it itself anyway. if you can't find it.. then as above.. install the -devel package.
