I'm trying to install GIMP v 2.0
It tells me i need to install other sw:
fontconfig >= 2.2.0 is needed by gimp-2.0.5-0.fc2.3
glib2 >= 2.3.0 is needed by gimp-2.0.5-0.fc2.3
gtk2 >= 2.3.0 is needed by gimp-2.0.5-0.fc2.3
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.3.4) is needed by gimp-2.0.5-0.fc2.3
libcrlayeng.so.1 is needed by gimp-2.0.5-0.fc2.3
libcroco.so.1 is needed by gimp-2.0.5-0.fc2.3
libcrseleng.so.2 is needed by gimp-2.0.5-0.fc2.3
libexif.so.9 is needed by gimp-2.0.5-0.fc2.3
pango >= 1.4.0 is needed by gimp-2.0.5-0.fc2.3
This is a nighmare.
Can someone give me links where to download these (for RH 9.0)
rpmfind.net is useless
rpm.pbone.net has some but usually only dev versions
Most of the packages you need are gtk2 based packages. Since I was able to find most of the rh9 packages in few minutes of googling.. I left the rest of the lib files to you.
GTK2, GLIB2 and Pango are available here
When i try to install gtk2-2.4.7-2.6.i386.rpm , i get this:
error: Failed dependencies:
atk >= 1.6.0-1 is needed by gtk2-2.4.7-2.6
glib2 >= 2.4.0-1 is needed by gtk2-2.4.7-2.6
libXinerama.so.1 is needed by gtk2-2.4.7-2.6
pango >= 1.4.0-1 is needed by gtk2-2.4.7-2.6
gtk2 = 2.2.1 is needed by (installed) gtk2-devel-2.2.1-4
The link for fontconfig you show is a development version
(This is all i could find as well)
I don't want or need a development version
Are you using KDE or Gnome..
My bet is KDE.. Gnome cant do a thing without gtk2 (or you are have a older version)
Anyhow this seems like a classic rpm problem.
(I gave up mandrake for the same reason and running debian happily since then)
Found another thread regarding the same problem.. Its not going to help much but atleast you know you are not the only one with the rpm dependency problems
Debian uses the DEB binary format. Its like RPMS but more mangeable. Which means if you want gimp2.0 then you also have all its accompanying packages also available at the debian package site. i.e. everything from gtk2 to glib2. All you need to do is type on the command line
Code:
apt-get install gimp2
You have the option of staying with the stable, testing or the unstable versions also.
It figures out which packages need to be installed.. and downloads them along with gimp if required. Keeps the system in shape.. such good shape actually that I there has never been any issue in compiling from source if I had to. All I need to do is get the required devel package and am done.
All in all I have found that the debian packages bind easier than rpms and they make sure there are no gaps. That means if they say a package is available that means all its dependencies are available too.
About installing it.. It was damn easy in my case. I suppose you can do that too. Take a knoppix cd (or any such distros based on deb and that can be booted off the disk) and there should be a program to install in to the disk. (am sure there is ample documentation on the net about that).
I've heard suse9.2 is great too. But am too happy with my debian sid to go for anything else.

(p.s: got gimp2.2-pre1 compiled from sources two days back; runs great)
