Question Trying to install Gentoo on a Pavillion g71260us Notebook

Hello.
I am trying to install Gentoo on a Pavillion g71260us Notebook which is now running GNU GRUB 1.98... It came factory installed with ms windows 7. I guess I have had a learning curve trying to install this. I first tried to change the boot order and boot from a DVD and a USB result nothing. I think the GRUB script maybe running the show because it recognized the mem stick but won't boot from it. I don't know GRUB very well and I can't find good examples I'd appreciate help. This is what the script for normal boot under grub looks like:
---
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,msdos1)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set b205a437-84-405e-e75e46d4891a
echo ' Loading Linux ...'
linux /boot/vmlimuz-2,6,32-amd64 root=UUID=b205a437-84-405e-e75e46d4891a ro quiet
echo 'Loading ramdisk'
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.5.43-5-amd64
echo
------------------
I think I need some grub code to make it boot from the USB stick? I have an idea what some of this means but not a very good idea. The *part_msdos* confuses me and I don't understand how that b205a437-84-405e-e75e46d4891a is obtained.

Thanks
Hipdude

hello hipdude, wow, first post after 2 years... welcome!

let me say, i think you should start with a different distro.
take a look at distrowatch.com and choose something from the top 10.
linux mint is very good! if you don't like the looks, well that's always easy to change.

first of all you have to get it onto your usb stick; most distros have instructions on their website.

then you should boot into the live environment to see if it works on your hardware. note: at that stage it doesn't matter what is on your hard drive!!!

when you want to install it, you can either install it to your whole hard drive, purging everything that is on it (again, it doesn't matter what).
if you want to keep your windows it's a little trickier and depends on the installer - again, best help is from your distro's webpage/wiki/forum (search before asking).

fwiw, grub is not an operating system, it's a bootloader. the code you posted is totally outdated. but again, it shouldn't matter at all.

Perhaps the OP had better tell us what s/he did. And what, if any, the problem is.
If it came pre-installed with Win7 how come it now boots to a seemingly valid grub environment ?. What did you do, and what was the result.

If the only problem is you can't get the USB to boot, that is controlled by the BIOS - I have one netbook that will only boot if I interrupt the boot and select "external disk" which happens to be the USB thumb drive. Even though there is also a USB option ...
