Trying to get VNC to work with Windows Vista/XP

I am trying or struggling would be a better word, to get the correct version of linux VNC and the windows VNC to play nice. I can get the VNC to play with my vista and xp computers nicely. But, I can get the Ubuntu Linux machine to connect with my vista and xp computers at all.

I would appreciate a step by step (newbee) guide to setting it up and
"slapping the windows" computers into line. I want to switch over
entirely to linux but having "growing" problems with the switch.

Please help me to make the transition with the appropriate VNC program to make them all play nice, PLEASE!

I have spent hours trying to tinker it out on my own. I would be most appreciative if you could help me.

On a further note, I am completely confused on how to use the RPM option to get the program to self-install. I double click on the file and it opens a directory. HELP.
