Trying to do screen and video captures using a Linux system

I've been searching for decent software to capture video and screenshots on a Linux system but with no luck. Does anyone have any advice?

Not too sure what kind of video capture you are after, but screenshots are simple with xwd. There are some GUI frontends to xwd, if that's what you are after. Sorry I can't name any off the top of my head. I think ksnapshot might be one.

Yes, I've used k-snapshot before. I guess I'm more interested in a video capture tool that saves me from doing screen captures of graphics and animations frame by frame.

Lisa P,
Welcome to LQ!

You might like to take a look at vnc2swf

Here's a (fairly old) link to get you started:

http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=04/07/26/1815242

Or put vnc2swf into the search button on this site for further links.

Some other options include: recordMyDesktop, ScreenKast, Istanbul, and XVidCap.
