Trying to convert users to Linux!
But the problem is, he uses AOL Cable broadband service. To me that just means, its a cable modem, just like comcast or anyother cable service. However, I know AOL has some type of software they use to authenticate user names and passwords. Would I just be able to setup PengAOL on his machine to do this? Or what does he need to connect using AOL?

I'm not exactly sure, but it may be PPPOE type service? You can always try it out in Knoppix first to see if it will work-

I thought about that, but wasnt sure how the pppoe service would work with a cable modem. I thought pppoe was used for dsl?
|
As far as I know, PPPoE is just an authentication service and doesn't require DSL to work. It's just that most Cable providers use different methods of authentication such as *shudder* MAC address checking. (A friend of mine has a cable account that uses MAC checking)

What type of authentication does AOL use? Would SuSE 9.1 provide this method to authenticate to AOL?
SuSE is the distro I recommended to him. Any tips on converting someone to linux would be helpful. Like what should I setup for him, what tips should I give him, etc... Mostly, he is concerned about not being able to connect to the internet. |
I came across the follwwing:
