trying to configure nic

i am brand new to linux and i am stumped. i have loaded openlinux and have installed a 3com nic (3c900-tpo). there is no eth0 device. when i type in "cat /proc/pci" it shows the device. when i run "ifconfig eth0" it says device not found. am i doing something wrong? what do i need to do to get the nic recognized as eth0? please help.

Try "ifconfig -a" (man ifconfig for more on that) and let us know what it gives you.

Also- we've had a lot of network configuration questions posted in the last couple of days. Review the posts in this forum (as well as in Networking and General) whose subject lines have network-oriented keywords, and try the pointers given in those. If they don't lead you to a solution, repost with information on what you've tried so far, what problems/errors you've encountered, etc.
