trying to compile... libXext errors

I'm trying to compile a converter program that will (hopefully) turn ms outlook mailboxes into something I can import into ximian evolution (I'm trying to start using linux exclusively). I'm having some trouble with the compiling. First it gave me an error telling me that it couldn't locate my x-includes directory, so I told the compiler it was /etc/X11. same for the x-libraries directory. I'm guessing those weren't the right directories, since now it tells me it can't find libXext and that it's giving up looking. What are the correct directories for x-libraries and x-includes? I'm at a loss.
