Trying to avoid bad color gun in old CRT
 

I have a dual-head monitor setup with X.org. It works fine. However, my second monitor is an older (albeit 17") LCD. It was free and I'd like to keep using it, but it occasionally makes a high-pitched squeal. I was told by a friend that this is due to a bad 'color gun' in the monitor, so to figure out which color it was, I waited for the sound to recur, minimized all its windows, and used xsetroot to test pure red, green, and blue backgrounds. The results were inconclusive, except that green seems to work fine. So I'm wondering, since I don't do much of anything important on that monitor besides IM, music, and terminal windows running lengthy emerges, if there is any way to use X.org or some separate tool to tint everything on that screen green, which should make the noise less frequent.

In KDE control center -> peripherals -> Screen, there are color gamma setting. I believe you can do this in in xorg.conf, don't know how exactly.
Making everything green is really bad on your eyes though. My monitor made the screen tinted green for a few days and my eyes felt really bad because of it.

It seems that the underlying tool for that KDE thing and other tools I found when searching 'color gamma' probably use the xgamma program, which is working well for me. I can see what you mean about the eye irritation though, so I might just go with a solid green background and let everything else be colored like it should.
