Truecrypt in Arch - No option to encrypt system drive
 

I have just installed truecrypt 7.1 in Arch via pacman, and I want to encrypt the entire drive. When I start the volume wizard it seems to be lacking the option to encrypt the system partition or the entire drive.

When I look at guides such as this:
http://www.randyjensenonline.com/blo...ire-hard-drive there is an option to "Encrypt the system partition or entire system drive", yet when I start the wizard my screen looks like the attached image.

I have added the truecrypt group and made myself a member as per the instructions here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php...crypt_group.29 but it didn't help.

Can anyone offer any suggestions please? Any help much appreciated.

Further to this, if I run truecrypt from the console there are no error messages. I also tried using pacman to uninstall truecrypt, and then re-installed it from the run file on the truecrypt website, but it's still exactly the same.

As far as I know, you cannot encrypt a "system drive"", ie a boot/root partition with Truecrypt in Linux.

Is there some reason you don't want to use LUKS? It's designed for Linux, functions from the kernel and permits fulldrive encryption, including root if you leave a small unencrypted partition for the kernel to boot from.

My system dual boots Arch with Windows 7 (I use Windows for games) so I chose truecrypt because it's compatible with both. Something I haven't yet tried is encrypting the drive from within Windows instead. If I try it I'll let you know what happens. It's currently an empty system so there's no data that I'm worried about yet. If it fails I may end up just encrypting my /home directory since that's where virtually all of my sensitive data is kept.

Curiously, the screenshot at point 6 in the link above states "Windows and Linux" as potential dual-boot options on its "whole drive" screen, but the buttons on that window suggest the screenshot was taken from Windows, so perhaps it's not an option in the Linux version after all.

I asked the same question on the truecrypt forums (http://forums.truecrypt.org/viewtopic.php?p=99805#99805) and the answer was the same; the linux client doesn't have the option.

Since it's a dual boot I will try performing the encryption from Windows instead.
