Troubleshooting x-server "Can't Open Display"

I just installed Debian 30R2 from CD (using the generic ISO) and I can't get x-server working. I have a MSI GeForce4 ti4200 128MB video card with 8XAGP and I have a Viewsonic A90f+ monitor. While installing I used tasksel to select "desktop environment" and then I installed the default packages.

After booting it seems that GDM loads fine but before I can even login I get a screen telling me x-server could not be started. Then it asks me if i want to see a diagnostic page and clicking yes displays a blank window. Then it asks me if i want to run the x-server configuration tool and clicking yes results in a dialog telling me x-server will restart, which fails.

One thing I noticed is that it didn't run the xf86config tool (which i hear it should) so I ran it. When it asks me how much ram is on my vid card what should I put? The largest option is 4096k. I have 128 megs on the card...

Also in the list of video cards the config tool prompts me with, the only GeForce listing I see is just a generic "GeForce video card" Should I be using this?

So, I run the config tool and then try running startx. I get an error message telling me it can't open display. if i run initx it tells me a bunch of directories don't exist as well as a link to "X"

I've discovered this to mean (I think) that there needs to be a virtual link from one program to the other but I can't figure out how to do this.

I've gone through the HOWTO on setting up x-server, but none of it seems to fit what i'm seeing on the monitor in linux. Since I'm still new to linux, following some of the jargon friendly instructions make it difficult.

Any help?

Thanks,
-SB

P.S.: I can't find a .bashrc file anywhere to edit the PATH var to include x-server dirs. What gives?

You might need to get drivers to get this video working properly here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0256.html

Also what version of X are you using? And about your bashrc file, if you don't have one, simply create one or just use or edit the global file which should be /etc/profile
