If you disable sound under gaim does it start? I'm wondering if you are having issues with your sound card locking. You using KDE and artsd or something else?

is it only these programs that don't work with sound anymore?
it may be a permissions problem; check permissions of /dev/dsp and try doing chmod 777 /dev/dsp while root

I second that idea. You might also want to check that artsd is running. My /dev/dsp files are owned by my user (JH) and the root group
Code:
jh@e128 jh]$ ls -l /dev/ds*
crw------- 1 jh root 14, 3 Jan 30 2003 /dev/dsp
crw------- 1 jh root 14, 19 Jan 30 2003 /dev/dsp1
crw------- 1 jh root 55, 0 Jan 30 2003 /dev/dsp56k
I'm guessing that part of the login process must chown them. To be honest I've never paid that much attention as this is my work machine and sounds isn't essential.
cheers
Jamie...

My XMMS had that problem a while ago. I ended up changing the sound driver. Also go into control panel and tell it to not load aRts on startup. If that works, then you can work up from there.

It prolly will unless you told it to not load aRts on startup. Go to control center for that, then sound and multimedia, then sound system.
