Trouble with Tor - can't install
So I'm starting this as a separate thread from my last post, since the previous post went quiet.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ls-4175496116/
The last three or four posts are about setting up Tor. I'm stuck.
Thx

Go here, https://www.torproject.org/download/...d-easy.html.en
and download the Tor bundle to your home directory. Once there run, as user, tar -xvf filename
that is, the full name of the tor bundle you just downloaded, for example, tar -xvf tor-browser-linux64-3.5.2.1_en-US.tar.xz
That will create a directory/folder named, tor_browser (and whatever language you are using), for example, tor-browser_en-US
Inside that new directory you will find, start-tor-browser
Edit your menu and add this new item or create a new icon/launcher on your desktop, and use, start-tor-browser as the command.
Good Luck.

There is no setting up !
5 years ago there was ( and a lot of setting of things, i have been using tor for YEARS)
but NOT NOW
as to running the tor-bundle
use "cwizardone's" post
you also do not even have to use the terminal to un zip the archive
just "r-click" it and open it with the already installed archive manager
JUST LIKE ON WINDOWS 95,98,2000,ME,XP,VISTA,7,8,8.1
all you have to do is "double click " on the one script "start-tor-browser"
it is a all in one bundled set of programs that will launch a custom version of firefox
grabbing a random Endpoint exiting the tor network
now from the other post
you said all you needed was a VPN
there are many
most you need to par a monthly fee for

Tor is in debian"s package manager. you think it might be in ubuntu's?
That's if you are running ubuntu as your user-agent string indicates.

In the repositories....
Yes, it's available to download through synaptic, but on the Tor website they explicitly warn against using that source, since it is infrequently updated.
Nevertheless, I figured I'd try it now. It failed to download even through Synaptic:

I just downloaded from the 2 links you provided, they are active. If you can download them you can use gdebi to install it.

for a 64 bit OS install
just use this
https://www.torproject.org/dist/torb...1_en-US.tar.xz
the xz archive
r-click on it and open the archive in your archive manager
( the exact same way you used to do on windows xp,vista,7,or8 )
then double click on the script "start-tor-bundle"
HOW HARD IS THAT

I think it's a network problem, maybe using proxy?

They have other methods of using Tor, for example tails, which is a dedicated Tor OS to run on a usb stick or in a VM.
I used to use Tor but not anymore because I read and heard that NSA has counter measures for Tor traffic as well.
