Trouble with MPlayer and subtitles

I have a DVD and an external .srt file on my computer. I load the DVD and then load the subtitle file and start playing the DVD, but the subtitles and DVD times don't synchronize. While playing the DVD, the timer on MPlayer starts at 00:00:00 of course, but when it reaches a random number like 00:00:48 or something, it restarts at 00:00:00 but the DVD still continues to play and progress. But this makes the subtitles repeat over and over again, because the timing thinks it keeps resetting. How can I fix this?

Try starting mplayer on the command line with -sub subtitlefile.srt
