Trouble with K3B and DVD Nero works fine

Hi,

I'm a bit mystified by this little problem I'm having:

K3B will burn DVDs, but the process is S L O W. Before you ask: yes, DMA is enabled, and yes, the drive's BIOS is up to date. Currently, it takes over an hour to burn a full DVD with K3B. I also noticed that the FIFO buffer and Device Buffer bars aren't doing anything at all when I burn a DVD, and are full when I burn a CD. CDs burn very quickly.

Just for laughs, I tried out the RPM from Nero, and it works just fine! Less than 15 minutes for a full DVD. (as a matter of fact, I was burning the exact same set of files that I did in K3b)

Why would K3B take 4x-5x longer to burn the same exact DVD?

The drive is an Aopen DUW1616/ARR. It shows up as /dev/hdc.

I'd like to be using the free software, so if someone has ideas....

EDIT: Ok, Fired up Nero again today, and this time, it gave me a note about DMA not being enabled. hdparm showed that sure enough, it wasn't enabled?! Rebooted, and opened Nero again, and all is as it should be. What is going on here?
