trouble running apache

Ok heres the deal I am trying to run Apache 1.3 on my debian system I have tried installing and removing apache several times and have even done a fresh install of debian the problem persists. When I first install apache after a fresh install of debian it will run set up a pid file the whole gammot but when I go to configure apache in the httpd.conf file and restart apache it will not run it will say apache web server started but it will not start a pid file no apache processes are running no nothing the only time i get apache to work is when it is first installed after that nothing. All my other servers deamons work fine like ftp send mail and telnet apache refuses to work.

thanks
Peace

What changes have you made to the default httpd.conf file?

Any other changes on the system between it working and not working?
