Angry Trouble installing Python 2.3 on SuSE 9 system

Here's my predicament, and I highly appreciate any help I can get here.

linux:/home/idiot/Anarchy/Python-2.3 # ./configure
checking MACHDEP... linux2
checking EXTRAPLATDIR...
checking for --without-gcc... no
checking for --with-cxx=<compiler>... no
checking for c++... no
checking for g++... no
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C++ compiler default output... configure: error: C++ compiler cannot create executables
linux:/home/idiot/Anarchy/Python-2.3 #

Here's the file folder.

linux:/home/idiot/Anarchy/Python-2.3 # ls
. .cvsignore install-sh Misc PCbuild setup.py
.. Demo Lib Modules pyconfig.h.in Tools
config.log Doc LICENSE Objects Python
configure Grammar Mac Parser README
configure.in Include Makefile.pre.in PC RISCOS
linux:/home/idiot/Anarchy/Python-2.3 #

I downloaded Python in .tgz format and while I was trying to configure it, I got the "cannot create executables" error. Now, I'm obviously still rather new to the command line side of any form of linux, so any help possible would be great. I've been running SuSE 9.0 as of late (after a bit of problems with Mandrake 9.2).

I know, I know, stupid Not really like I have much of an option these days (laptop refuses to run Windows anything, kinda cool how it hates the system).

Anyhow, once again, I know this is probably an extremely easy fix, but I have no idea what I'm doing and I'm enlisting help. Thanks in advance to those that can help me.

You've installed gcc - have you installed the g++ portion (the C++ compiler)? These are usually packaged separately.

I haven't the slightest idea. It's been a few months since I put gcc on. That's probably my problem, I'll look into it. Thanks.
