Here's my predicament, and I highly appreciate any help I can get here.

I downloaded Python in .tgz format and while I was trying to configure it, I got the "cannot create executables" error. Now, I'm obviously still rather new to the command line side of any form of linux, so any help possible would be great. I've been running SuSE 9.0 as of late (after a bit of problems with Mandrake 9.2).
I know, I know, stupid
Not really like I have much of an option these days (laptop refuses to run Windows anything, kinda cool how it hates the system).
Anyhow, once again, I know this is probably an extremely easy fix, but I have no idea what I'm doing and I'm enlisting help. Thanks in advance to those that can help me.
