Trouble installing Open Office 4.1.1 in Ubuntu 14.04

Hi -
Over the last couple of days I've tried to install Open Office 4.1.1 on my laptop which runs Ubuntu 14.04. I've followed the instructions from various tutorials but in the end I get a message like "that file doesn't exist on this computer." Here are web addresses for some of the tutorials I used:

http://sourcedigit.com/12463-install...-ubuntu-14-04/

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/foru...p?f=16&t=70100

http://linuxg.net/how-to-install-ope...d-derivatives/

http://iweb.dl.sourceforge.net/proje...b_en-US.tar.gz

Is there something I'm missing in trying to install Open Office? Is Open Office somehow incompatible with Ubuntu 14.04?

A second issue I noticed is that Gdebi couldn't install the Open Office .deb package either; and when it finished trying -- and indicated the install had failed -- I couldn't close the Gdebi window.
Does anyone have insight on these issues?

Thanks,
Gil

first
openoffice or Libreoffice

right now the two are still almost the same

for Openoffice
https://www.openoffice.org/download/

for a modern 64 bit OS
on the menu select the 64 bit version
"linux 64-bit(x86-64)"

download the tarbal
"Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.1_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz"

extract the tarbal
( it is a compressed ziped archive )

in the folder ( en-US) there is a a folder CALLED "readmes/"

and in that folder is a file called "README_en-US"

--- READ IT !!! ---
it contains the install instructions

in the /DEBS folder run the command the instructions tell you to run
Code:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
then cd into the "desktop-integration " DEBS/desktop-integration "
and rerun that command

Read the Read Me File

John VV -
Per your suggestion, I read the "read me" file. I've read it before but thought maybe I'd missed the installation instructions you referred to. I really can't find anything that looks like installation instructions. I see information for dealing with problems when starting the program, (after it's installed); I see system requirements for running Open Office; I see notes about locking Open Office files (documents made after the program is installed); I see notes about shortcut keys; I see a variety of topics but I don't see anything that talks about installing the program on a computer.
If I have missed this would you kindly copy and paste the information?

Thanks.

Hi:

Here's Libre Office for Ubuntu.-

http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libreoffice

You can install the way JohnVV is teaching you or you can try this way too.

Just scroll to the bottom of the page and click on amd64 or i386 (which ever your computers architecture is) and download the pkg. Once it's downloaded install it with root privileges.

Code:
sudo dpkg --install libreoffice (exact name of pkg)

I was hoping to install Open Office, not Libre Office. In fact, I've removed Libre Office. Here's what my terminal says when I try to install Open Office 4.1.1.

gil@gil-ThinkPad-T400:~$ cd /
gil@gil-ThinkPad-T400:/$ cd usr
gil@gil-ThinkPad-T400:/usr$ cd local
gil@gil-ThinkPad-T400:/usr/local$ cd src
gil@gil-ThinkPad-T400:/usr/local/src$ cd DEB
bash: cd: DEB: No such file or directory
gil@gil-ThinkPad-T400:/usr/local/src$ cd DEBS
gil@gil-ThinkPad-T400:/usr/local/src/DEBS$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

I'm noticing that when I get to the Desktop Integration folder and give the command "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" that an error occurs: dpkg: error processing archive openoffice4.1-debian-menus_4.1.1-9775_all.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/soffice', which is also in package libreoffice-common 1:4.2.8-0ubuntu2

Could this have something to do with the problem? I've removed Libre Office already, and repeated the removal procedure numerous times -- each time getting confirmation that the program is removed already.

Thanks.

Here's Open Office but it's just one pkg, there are many.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/op...icedocument1.0

Here's the whole list of pkg that I had to look through till I made it to "L"-
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/allpackages

To confirm that Libre Office has been uninstalled you can run dpkg -L (name of program) and dpkg will return if
it is installed or not.

Your right this is the problem-
Code:
dpkg: error processing archive openoffice4.1-debian-menus_4.1.1-9775_all.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/soffice', which is also in package libreoffice-common 1:4.2.8-0ubuntu2
When you remove a program other lib's like to hang around so you must purge and remove completely.
Least that's been my experience with Linux Mint which is also Ubuntu based.
Try this cmd and than restart your pc.

Code:
sudo apt-get --purge remove libreoffice
That should get rid of all remnants of Libre Office.

Another thing would be to look in your Ubuntu Software Center for Open Office and if the Software Center doesn't have it do an pkg search in Synaptic.-

Thanks for your suggestion. I got a reply on an Open Office forum that was very similar to yours -- the person said add an astrisk to the end of the word libreoffice. I ran the apt-get command that way and it purged the last bits of libreoffice and I was easily able to install Open Office.
I appreciate your help.

Your Welcome; always glad to help.-

I had a feeling those existing libraries that where associated with Libre Office was holding up the progress of Open Office getting installed.

Glad to hear you have Open Office installed.

Mark your thread SOLVED when you get the chance.
