Trouble Installing Netscape 7

Can anyone help ? I am new to Linux and I think that I am picking up the techy stuff quite quick. However I'm still a little flakey on the whole installing software thing...

I have downloaded Netscape ver 7.0 from www.download.com and saved it in my home directory on my PC.

I have un-compressed the file and tried to run the Install script.... but nothing happens. Can anyone point me in the right direction please ?

I have Linux SuSe 8.1 Personal and I must say that it crushes the MS Windows OS's like they were tiny little ants.... So happy :)

Jonah.

How are you trying to run the script? Have you opened a console in the directory that the file was downloaded to, as root and then typed ./thefileyoujustdownloaded ? You need to, clicking files doesn't work in Linux.

If you did that, perhaps you need to change permissions first. Then, instead type chmod 777 thefileyoujustdownloaded

It will then be executable, and you can do the first operation, now (./thefi....)

Hope that helps.

It works !!!

Thanks for your reply.

I took my time and read the readme file again. I then moved the folder containing the un-installed version of Netscape ti the "/usr/local" directory. After that I opend the console, went to that directory and typed "netscape-installer" and hey presto.... it installed.

I did all that from the "root" user. When I logged back in as myself (normal user) I just created a "link" from my desktop to the executable file....

Not sure how you change the icon though ? you know, so that it shows the Netscape "N" instead of a file with a shell on it ??? any ideas ?

Many thanks

Regards
Jonah
