Trouble installing Enlightenment E17 on FC3

've recently redone the linux side of my computer to Fedora Core 3 from RedHat 9. I did a clean install, I didn't try to upgrade RedHat. I have run all the available updates available through the RedHat update tool.

When you download Englightment E17 it says that you must install the following components in order, eet, evas, ecore, embryo, imlib2, edje, enlightenment.

eet required jpeglib.h but after I found that it installed just fine. Evas required pkgconfig. I found and installed that but evas still didn't work. I tried ecore but it didn't work because no evas, no shock there. I finally found an RPM for evas, it required libedb.so.1 and libeet.so.0 After I installed them it worked fine.

Now when I try to install ecore the ./configure runs fine but make fails miserably, this is what I get. I do pretty well with a Windows machine but Linux is still a bit of a problem sometime. Here is what I get when I try to run make:

Cute, the error is too long to fit in the message and the forum won't let me put a url in unless I have more than 5 posts. That's just lovely. To get around that the link are in my signature. The first is a link to the error I get when I tried to make ecore. The second is the error when I try to make evas as downloaded from enlightenment.

Does this mean anything to anybody?

Thanks for the help

Do you have the development libraries for X from your distribution installed?
Did you see this;

I thought I chose to install the development packages but maybe I didn't. Without re-running the system install completely how would I check and how would I install them? I'm sorry if these sound like terribly novice questions.

I went to the site you linked and downloaded the RPM's. That worked much better, I was easily able to install all of the needed components. Now I just need to figure out where FC3 places it's configuration file so that it would try to run Enlightenment instead of Gnome.

Ok, I created the .xinitrc and got enlightenment to run!

Now the fun part, none fo the programs that are preconfigured will run. Now all I have to do is find the documentation on this release. It would be nice if I could get a browser to run, or even a terminal. Thanks for all your help.

See if this helps;

and your welcome, I have it installed on another box but haven't gotten around to edit anything.You could get e17genmenu and run as youruser not root
Code:

e17genmenu -g
thats for gnome -k for kde menu items

I got it running and I was able to install and execute Eterm. The problem is that none of the programs run from the menu. Example to run Eterm I have to switch to another terminal and run it. This loads Eterm on my X desktop, from there I can execute other programs like Firefox and Thunderbird.

Both FireFox and Eterm are already listed in the applications available in E17 but apparently they point to the wrong place. From what I can tell the configuration for these menus are now in a much more complicated format. They used to be just text files in E16. Now apparently you need some other programs to be able to edit them. There are screen shots of Entangle, a program that is supposed to allow me to change them but I can't seem to find any links to download it.

I was looking in the manual and it shows you how to do these things if you have the proper programs but I don't see the programs readily availble which strikes me as somewhat odd. Maybe I'm just blind. I've been busy doing some other things today but I'm about in the mood to fool with it again so I think I'll work on it some more. Again I appreciate all the help. I used to really like tinkering with computers but over the years that has turned into more of a chore than a pleasure, helpdesk work will do that to you. Linux though brings back a little bit of the fun because you have to figure it out. It gives you the feeling that you are once again doing something that not everybody can do. I think the windows point and click mentallity has made a LOT of people use computers who really have no business doing so. I kinda feel the same way working on Linux but I'm trying :)

Ok, reading appears to be a great skill. Entangle seems to be part of e_utils which I am installing now.

comprookie2000 06-04-2005 03:25 PM

Where did you get it?I tried with yum and apt with Didier's repository's and it looks like it has been pulled.I don't know why they have to make a simple thing as editing a menu such a big deal.

Same crap I'm running into. I THOUGHT it was working, turns out it isn't there as you have discovered. This is ridiculous.

nathan plemons 06-05-2005 10:12 PM

Well I've manged to get almost everything installed but the Utils. The funny things is if click on something like firefox from the "dock" for the lack of a better term, it appears to run for a minute according to TOP and then dies. As does Evidence, Eterm, etc. Meanwhile if I launch an e-term window from another terminal I can run all the applications just fine.

I would love to get the e_utils so I could take a look at it!
