trouble getting firefox to start

I am having alot of problems with firefox. I installed everything correctly by using the script that came bundled with the tarball. But, no matter what I do, I can't get the darn program to actually execute. The command 'firefox' just returns the following-
Code:
> dsmurf@binaural:~$ firefox
> Cannot find mozilla runtime directory. Exiting.
I'm not sure what to do. I even tried manually copying the firefox executable files to my /usr/local/bin directory, but the same message appears when i try to execute the program. I've looked all over google for "firefox help" and "executing firefox" but no one seems to be having the same problem that I am.

If anyone can lend me a hand, or knows about something that I might have missed, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Code:

Looks like you need to execute that from ~/firefox-installer/firefox
If that's not it...

Can you post the filename that you d/led, and go back through
your .bash_history and post the commands you executed, and
where you ran them from?

It must be something simple, as the Firefox install is really easy.

Did you go over the instructions here ? Which version
did you get - the installer.tar.gz?

Extract the tarball and run the installer like so:

Edit: These instructions from the Firefox website are wrong! - see edit below...
tar -xzvf firefox-1.0PR-i686-linux-gtk2+xft.tar.gz
cd firefox-1.0PR-i686-linux-gtk2+xft/
./firefox-installer

Really, that's all it is to it. I did it on 2 Slack boxen yesterday,
no problems. Then you execute it from /path/to/firefox-installer/firefox

Edit: I thought something about those instructions, from the Firefox
website, weren't exactly right. Since I was running Firefox-0.9.3 I d/led
the latest version, and these are the steps I took. It works, for I'm posting
this from it now...
[code]
mingdao@james:~$ rm -rf firefox/
mingdao@james:~$ tar zxvf firefox-1.0PR-i686-linux-gtk2+xft-installer.tar.gz
mingdao@james:~$ cd firefox-installer/
mingdao@james:~/firefox-installer$ ./firefox-installer
(which sets up the program and imports your old settings)
mingdao@james:~/firefox-installer$ firefox
(which runs the program - this post is the proof ;)

Since you probably don't want to run the app from a terminal:
If you're using KDE, right-click on the little K over the gear icon, select
Menu Editor and then follow the path to your Firefox app and update.
If you're using Fluxbox, just change the path in ~/.fluxbox/menu

The file that I downloaded was named "firefox-0.8-i686-pc-linux-gnu-ctl-svg-gtk2.tar.gz"

I checked .bash_history, but I'm not sure exactly what I was looking for.

But, I did take your advice and just changed my fluxbox menu entry from "firefox" to "~/firefox-installer" Thanks for the help
