Trouble compiling nmap with openssl

I'm trying to compile the latest nmap 3.5.0 but I receive the following error after I run make.

g++ -Llibpcap-possiblymodified -L/usr/local/ssl/include/openssl//lib -Lnbase -Lnsock/src/ -o nmap main.o nmap.o targets.o tcpip.o nmap_error.o utils.o idle_scan.o osscan.o output.o scan_engine.o timing.o charpool.o services.o protocols.o nmap_rpc.o portlist.o NmapOps.o TargetGroup.o Target.o FingerPrintResults.o service_scan.o NmapOutputTable.o -lm -lssl -lcrypto -lnbase -lnsock libpcre/libpcre.a -lpcap
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lssl
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [nmap] Error1

openssl is installed and working fine.

Anyone know what it's looking for or how to correct this problem?
