How can you get a transparent terminal? Do you need a special terminal-emulator. From which version does xfree86 support it. Is it possible in fluxbox?
Cause it looks really cool and I would love to have it .
Several different terminal emulators (or "xshells") provide this feature. On the lightweight side there are aterm and wterm, the middle of the road is Eterm, and then the heavy ones Konsole and Gnome-Terminal.
I use aterm and I love it.
If you install aterm, type man aterm for info on the options. You can save them to a file called ~/.Xdefaults so every aterm you start will have the same options. This is the aterm section from my ~/.Xdefaults:
Hey guys!
do what I did and just use mate-terminal instead! It comes with the tranparency feature
I'm sure there are other terminals that come with transparency as well; I just haven't checked. Try it out! I love gnome-terminal but the transparency feature is very helpful and aesthetically pleasing as well (and that's important too)
Not sure how much the answer will apply any longer, since this thread had been closed for SIXTEEN YEARS before you reopened it. Most terminals support it these days, along with much that wasn't supported back then.

The standard Terminal in the NEWEST version of Debian 10 Buster DOES NOT have terminal transparency.
If my final say on increasing terminal aesthetic value helps someone then I would deem that an asset to this thread and therefore the site.
No such thing as "standard" terminal. The terminal depends entirely on what desktop environment was installed. The only standard terminal that MAY be installed is xterm which does not support transparency out of the box. As TB0ne mentioned, install any modern terminal to get transparency.

Ahh true. Thanks for correcting me. What I meant was the gnome-terminal that comes with gdm3 in Debian 10; Titled simply 'terminal'
