Translation software

Is there any open source software for translating text from one language to another (ex: English to Spanish) via command line?

Sorry pixellany, I should've been more specific. I'm interested in translating text from language to another, i.e. English to Spanish or vice versa.

OK---but why command line?

Have you looked at the various web sites that do this? My impression is that most of them do rather poorly----For example, it can be amusing to translate a phrase into French, and then back to English.

Regardless, I would guess that the underlying code for some of those sites is available.

The Internet connection doesn't always work, so I'd prefer not to rely on web-based solutions.

I'm not planning to translate English > French and back again, just English > French would be fine
