Transferring audio tapes to CD

I know this is a strange question but I thought I'd ask.

I have loads of audio tapes (not copyrighted, don't worry - just family stuff) that I would like to transfer to CD. I have no idea on how to do this other than plug a jack lead into my PC! So, can anyone recommend: software to record the audio to hard disc;
software to remaster the audio (eg the actual sounds are quiet and a bit hissy); software to record the audio to CD (I don't think k3b does this).

What format should I record to so that the CD can be played on a stereo? Is a standard CD-R OK for this?

I'd use krecord ( ) to record the audio - it's the only recording app I've seen on Linux with decent input level meters.

Audacity ( ) has some good filters for removing noise and normalising audio (making the loudest part of the sound 0dB)

K3b can do audio CDs

CD-Rs should be fine for almost all consumer CD players.
