Post transcode or mencoder options - discussion on what yeilds the best results

i am wondering if anyone experiments with the hundreds of options available to transcode and mencoder and can comment on the benefits of certain options.

for the sake of order in this thread, how about a dvd to xvid or if you prefer dvd to x264.

here's mine:
Code:
transcode -a 2 -y xvid,xvid -F mpeg4 -M 2 -N 0x55 \
-s 3 -w 1000,25,100 -b 64 -Z 720x480 \
-i /dev/dvd -T 1,-1 -o moo-vee.avi

-or-

mencoder -ovc xvid -oac mp3lame -xvidencopts bitrate=1000 \
-af volume=20 -lameopts vbr=3:br=96 \
dvd://1 -aid 128 -o moo-vee.avi
mencoder's 2-pass encode tends to generate very poor quality backups for me.

thoughts ?

running either video::dvdrip as a frontend for transcode, or acidrip as a frontend for mencoder will show you the options they use.

for x264 this set of mencoder options works very nice and it still looks good scaling back up, uses single pass, x264 is cpu intensive so it can take a while to encode with it.

(progressive dvd)
mencoder dvd://1 -vf scale=528:352 -oac faac -ovc x264 -x264encopts frameref=2:crf=20.0:8x8dct:subq=7:chroma_me:keyint=500:mixed_refs:bime:nodct_decimate:trellis=2:nofa st_pskip:nr=0:nopsnr:threads=0:bframes=8:b_adapt:brdo -of avi -o outfile.avi

for interlaced I usually switch the vf to -vf pp=ac/fd,scale=528:352 or -vf pp=ac/fd,scale=480:320

The file size usually comes in between 150-200MB per 40 minutes.

i notice no bitrateso its hard to get a aplles to aplles compare on quality (theres been discussion that x264 encodes better than xvid at the same bitrate / others say no)
is trellis=2 the quantizer amount ?
i think you can save a little size by lowering the key interval - if i understand correctly keys are used for seeking so i have little use for them.

The crf=20.0 is the quantizer. Its equivalent to somewhere between 2 and 3 on the mpeg2 quantizer scale, a crf of 18.0 is the same as 2. The mencoder man page has the formula for calculating it. The key interval is for seeking. The default is 250, increasing it reduces size since it puts in fewer key frames.

Some general x264 parameters are briefly explained here:
http://avidemux.org/admWiki/index.php?title=H264
It's for avidemux but can help for other tools.
