transcode divx with lame or ogg vbr

does anyone know how to set lame or ogg with vbr or abr in
i've read that the ability to use vbr was added several versions ago, and
i want to play with it. i've tried copying the command line from dvdrip
and pasting it to the command line, but it will take me forever to figure
out if that works or not. i also tried editing the .rip file, but there's too
many settings.
come to think of it, what i'm really wanting to know is how to set vbr while
using dvdrip.
i've just installed the new 6.10? transcode and the newest dvdrip and
the newest xvid 4 codec, and i'm playing with the b-frames settings and
stuff like that.
i wish i could get the quality under linux that i can gete with gordian knot.
i hate booting windows, and i'll leave ripped dvd's on my drive for weeks,
cause i don't want to leave windows running. i consider the computer
basically useless if windows is running.
