traceroute hanging, not timing out
Traceroute 1.9.4 (inetutils 1.9.4) is hanging and not timing out with continuous undesirable ICMP traffic. Have to press ctrl+c on the terminal to stop traceroute.
Is this issue fixed in latest traceroute 2.3 version? |
Traceroute should halt at 30 hops max. It will normally continue searching for the route as long as the hop count is less than the limit and has a long timeout with each hop where it gets no response and seems to hang when it gets no response.
Some routers are configured to give no id response but to forward the request. Others are programmed to block and not forward. Still others give the id response. This means that different routes to the same destination may give differing results. |
Yes, it should timeout when it gets no response, but it hangs instead, when this machine gets continuous ICMP (e.g. ping) traffic from other machine at the same time.
It is busy in processing those ICMP ping packets and could not timeout. Is this issue fixed in latest traceroute utility? |
