Tough one: GRUB keymap

How could I get GRUB to use a non-US keymap? Is it possible at all or is that keymap coded wham bam in the executable? Yesterday I asked Google but Google said meh.

Btw, I do not mean setting a keyboard on the kernel line as that does not have any effect on GRUB itself I believe . What I mean is setting the keymap for the GRUB console that you get when you press E (I seem to remember it is E) so you can edit/add boot entries right at boot time.

Two possible things that may help are section 8 and 13.2.13 of the grub manual, and second, give the grub maintainer a shove, possible a hand. Grub was not maintained for a while, but last I read, someone took up the position which is why we now see grub updates on occasion.
