touchpad on laptop
 

Hi,
I have a laptop with a touchpad mouse but I prefer to use an external one, they both currently work at the same time and I was wondering how I would go about disabling the touchpad mouse...

since someone started the thread, how would I set up my laptop to be able to use a usb mouse when I plug it in, and still have the touchpad active whenever I want to use that, too? Complete opposite of podollb's problem, but I figure if someone knows the answer to 1, they might know the answer to the other, too.

You don't have your distribution filled in (on the left) so it is hard to diagnose...

pod, never done the opposite, well sort of. i guess set up and use a usb mouse. that will disable the touchpad unless you do what's described above in the link. :scratch:

I have RH9 and I plugged my USB mouse in and both touchpad and USB mouse work at the same time... But I think that causes some delay in the clicking.

yeah. i'm not sure. i'm using rh7.3 and before i installed the synaptics.o touchpad driver, plugging in my usb logitech mouse caused the touchpad not to work. unplugging it would allow the touchpad to work. on my system, the touchpad worked perfectly with it's minimal functionality. on other people's laptops, i've seen the touchpad not work well at all (over sensitive movements and mouse clicking when none was done). makes me think there's no one way of solving touchpad problems. sorry i can't be of more help.

On some notebooks, disabling the touchpad is done from the BIOS.
ex. on DELL, page 4 there is the option for which pointing device to use... but that may change depending in your BIOS.

How about going into your XFree86Config file and changing the inputdevice which contains the unwanted input device, and remove it.
