Hi Folks. I use the tarball install of Mplayer on this machine with FC1, and FC2, and DVD's play fine, using the Rage128 graphics card (r128 driver). FC5 had problems with the install, and I had to change the graphics driver to vesa in xorg.conf, so as to be able to startx. I can't get Mplayer to run properly from the RPM from the greysector repo, and, I think because of GCC4 not being supported, can't even get the source file to install.

Now onto Totem.

If I open Totem, and put a DVD in the drive, then go to the menu and click on, in this instance, The Full Monty, which is showing on the menu for the DVDROM drive, I get a box which says. "The necessary plugins are not installed. Please get the plugins" . This is all a bit vague, as it gives no idea of which plugins are required.

The help file says that under. Preferences/General, there should be a button "Add Proprietary Plugins", but I don't have that.

I went to the Totem site, DL'd and installed the RPM FC5, for libdvdcss.

The version of Totem installed is the one using the Gstreamer backend. The only other Totem stuff on Yumex is.
The debug package, The development package, and a Mozilla plugin for Totem.

DVD's are not a big deal, as I can watch them on FC1, or FC2, but it would be nice to get Totem working for them.

Grahics card: Rage128 PCI, using r128 driver, but vesa driver on the FC5 install.
Soundcard: Ensoniq (ens1371 driver)
KDE, and Gnome desktops
Soundsystem: Alsa

Install totem-xine and libdvdcss. You can get these from the livna repo. If you use XINE as your backend for totem, together with win32 codecs, you can play most multimedia formats without any problems.

Hi Reddazz. Well I havn't tried Totem-xine yet, but have been messing with other players. I've got Ogle to work on FC2, and Xine also. Installed Ogle on FC5, (which I'm having to use the vesa graphics driver on) and it plays DVD's ok, but the playback is a bit juddery due to using the vesa driver, and it's CPU hammering.

I will try Totem-xine, but really need to find a fix first, as to why the Rage128's r128 driver won't work on FC5. The vesa one is ok for most graphics stuff, including games like Virus Killer, but playing DVD's is a real no-no.

I too had the same problem farpoint had, so I thought I would follow your advice. Being a newbie to Linux, I think I got it right, but ran into problems during the install from livna. First, I have Totem version 1.4.1 Duringan attempt to watch a movie, it said I was missing required plugins, so after finding your advice to farpoint, I downloaded totem-xine and libdvdcss. During installation, the totem-xine got the following error:

Unable to resolve dependencies for some packages selected for install. Totem-xine conflicts with totem.

The libdvdcss file downloaded and installed without a hitch. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please provide precise instruction to this newbie, assuming nothing.

You'll need to remove the original Totem first, and IIRC it will remove Rhythmbox as well (says it's a dep), so you will have to reinstall Rhythmbox. Having removed the original Totem, Totem-xine should install ok.

I made do just with the Xine package which worked ok.

Thanks...I'll give it a try. I just went into add/remove programs under applications and may have gone from bad to worse. From what I can tell, to delete a program you have to check all categories of programs you want to keep and uncheck the ones you want to delete under program manager. So, I left sound and video unchecked to delete totem, which in turn deletes all sound and video. To prevent anything else from being deleted, I left all other boxes checked, so now its going out and updating every package....ugghhhh.

Sorry. That's my fault. I'd been busy all day trying to set up spam filtering on Kmail, using Bogofilter. Saw the reply to the post, and rushed through an answer.

In the future, if your still not sure when someone replies to you, don't put off asking for more info. Most folks are only too happy to help.

If your using Yum for doing the updates, adding the odd package, etc, you can install Yumex.

yum install yumex

This is a GUI for Yum (almost). It lists the available packages, and those already installed, under a separate tab, named "remove packages" or something like that.

If you're using Apt, as an update/package manager, you can install Synaptic, which acts as a GUI frontend to Apt.

Personally I prefer Apt, and Synaptic, as I've always used them.
