Totem doesn't work in Ubuntu... Why?

Okay I'm trecking along and things are going well with learning Linux though I have no clue how to download something if it isn't in apt-get but that's down the road I guess.

Anyway, when I click on MPEGs they won't open with Totem, I just get:

"Totem could not play 'file:///home/sonoranfun/Desktop/004.mpg'.
Failed to open; reason unknown"

Does anybody know what the deal is with that? Also, anything else I can get in apt-get using Ubuntu that'll work?

Is it possible you don't have the correct codecs installed for what you're trying to play? I use Ubuntu, as well, but haven't had this trouble. There's a great post about how to setup multimedia stuff on their forum.
