Total recorder
I have come across this Windows programs which acts like a soundcard to an audio player program. If you play any CD on your PC, it will grab the output and create audio files on disk. These audio files can then be burned on CD and this allows you to create a new CD without the copy protection. BTW, I found this on EFF's site.

Sounds good to me, as I have a few CDs that will happily play on my home CD player but refuse to play in my car (SEAT Aura player). A ripper will not do, as I suppose it will copy the protection as well.

Does anybody know a similar program for Linux?

You could probably get raw pcm audio (to later be re-encoded) just by having your playing program output to a FIFO (named pipe).
