Tor not working on Kanotix 2005-4 live-CD

I am trying to install and run Tor ( http://tor.eff.org/ ) on a (fix-unionfsed and apt-get updated) Kanotix 2005-4 live-CD combined with the Switchproxy extension on Firefox. I am not having a good time at all. First, I have constant permissions headaches, but I think I fixed those, but still when I run the Tor detector ( http://serifos.eecs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/ipaddr.pl?tor=1 ) I never pass the test. Tor is not running properly. :-(

BTW - just in case - I also installed and configured privoxy according to the instructions. To no avail.

Does anyone have experience with trying to run Tor on Kanotix 2005-4 with the Firefox/Switchproxy combination or, alternatively, on Kanotix (or Knoppix) under any other browser?

If you config Privoxy and Tor to log at debug level and restart them, can you see requests?
