Question Top misreports

Guys, I have been troubleshooting an issue where top output shows incorrect data.

I reinstalled the procps package with the current version and with the latest one as well. But no luck.

I copied a working binary from other host but no fruit though..

Any ideas??

Thanks, MK

The CPU stat for first two process exceeds 100%

PID USERNAME THR PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE TIME CPU COMMAND
1618 mysql 51 16 0 447M 280M sleep 117.8H 112% mysqld-max
19426 root 31 16 0 3035M 436M run 116.1H 94.77% ndbd

Following the path you took, I suggest to try htop (http://htop.sourceforge.net/), just to see if it shows consistent results with top or there is something really bad in your system/kernel.

I tried with the hop, but even that gives incorrect stats. What I believe is weather top or htop looks for files under /proc dir gathers the information. Somehome those files are misformatted.

I know a reboot may fix it, but this is DB host. There is lot things involved starting from buy-off from business and so on just to fix this top.

If the application is multithread like mysql, then the total of each thread's cpu time, memory, etc is reported under one entry with top. That is how a 'single' process can exceed 100%.
