Tomcat Unable to Start - Exception

I have SuSE 9.3 runniung on my dell laptop. I went to install Tomcat using Yast. It installed Tomcat 5.0.30-4 onto the system in /srv/www as well as some files in /etc and /usr/share/tomcat5.

When I enabled the service from services applet in Yast, it came up with an asterisk. Looking at the log file (/var/log/tomcat5/base/catalina.out) I get:

Bootstrap: Class loader creation threw exception
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: addRepositoryInternal: repository='file:/usr/share/tomcat5/common/endorsed/[xml-commons-apis].jar'

The start.log files in the same folder shows:

Using CATALINA_BASE: /usr/share/tomcat5
Using CATALINA_HOME: /usr/share/tomcat5
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /usr/share/tomcat5/temp
Using JAVA_HOME: /usr/lib/jvm/java
/usr/share/tomcat5/bin/catalina.sh: line 284: /var/run/tomcat5.pid: Permission denied

I looked for /var/run/tomcat5.pid and there isn't such a file. I also googled that and only found another person with a similar issue. Based on a response there, I set permissionss on /var/run to 777 and that particularl line went away. I still have the java exceptions, tho.

(By the way, I had Tomcat running on a 9.2 install on another box.)

Ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Allright...

...having banged my head against the proverbial wall for a bit, I took a step back. I just reinstalled the RPM for the JDK 1.5.0_04 and then reinstalled Tomcat through Yast. Now all is well. Go figure.

security issue

I am having the same permission issue, but I'm hesitant about doing chmod 777. Doesn't that create some security hazzard?
