To Yum or not to Yum

Question!

If I use yum on whatever distro. Does it use your source files to determine what needs to be updated or does it look somewhere else?

Also does yum only work with RPM's?

Thanks in advance!

Some sites that might give you an idea of how yum works, etc. The first link is to get it working with Redhat as I don't think it will work with all distro's:

Thanks!

Yum is for RPM use! Might not work for me!
