to get privoxy working with transparent proxy

hi all,
i m working on an embedded board,on which i need to provide
ip-wise content filtering along with a transparent proxy,

I cant use squid,as i have memory limitation of 10MB,within which i have to complete the system,as squid requires large space for caching.
is it possible to make squid work without a cache????

another quesiton is,
for ip-wise content filterng i m using privoxy,bt privoxy cant gve me the transparent proxy facility, for which i have
to use some other tool for transparent proxy.i have a
tool called transproxy,but

can privoxy and transproxy work together??

Running a caching proxy w/o caching is uh, inefficient? Maybe look for alternatives.

can privoxy and transproxy work together??
Why not experiment? Wouldn't be that hard nor timeconsuming to set up a testbed with Privoxy and Transproxy.
Anyway. I'd say "yes", can't see no reason why not.

I would be inclined to agree. I don't know transproxy, but privoxy is fully configurable so I would expect that you could chain them without trouble.

thanx a lot for the reply,

as u said,i shud try it out and see,I tried to make transproxy and privoxy work together but it is not working, though the internet info says that they can work hand in hand.

so i want to know exactly HOW can they work together,as i tried out various ways but am without any conclusion.

and as u said, privoxy isfully configurable,i have succesfully configured privoxy and it is working properly but my system reqts is that i also need a transparent proxy, which privoxy cannot provide so i also want to take a transproxy.

so any thing that i can try
thanx again

waiting

For privoxy, read the config file (/etc/privoxy/config) section on forwarding. You can set your transparent proxy in front of it and have privoxy forward to it.

i tried that but am nt able to do that

so cud u kindly elaborate on that(the /etc/privoxy/config forwarding thing)

It is explained in the docs for privoxy. If you are having trouble with it you would do better to post what you did so it can be studied and corrections could be proposed.

Well I configured Tinyproxy at port 8888 and privoxy is running at port 8118.I can run both on specified ports by changing the proxy settings in the browser but when I try to redirect the traffic for 80 to Tinyproxy 8888 it runs as transparent proxy but when I try the same for Privoxy I cannot. It shows that Privoxy cannot work as transparent proxy or what.Plz guide me on the same.

I did tried squid compiled with uclibc but due to caching storage it gets crashed on my embedded board due to it's memory limitations. Is there any squid without cache I can try or some mini squid with acl support for embedded linux.

you need to set forwarding for privoxy to localhost:8888. Thus, your browser connects to port 8118, which is privoxy, and privoxy outputs on port 8888, which is being watched by tinyproxy. Tinyproxy picks up the data at port 8888 and outputs it on port 80.

Did this work for you? Feedback would be appreciated.

raklo 11-26-2006 10:22 PM

thanx a lot jim,but this didnt work

so what i did was,i removed privoxy as a content filter and used dansguardian along with the tinyproxy, and now i have a content filter along with the transparent proxy, both working properly
