To download software like wine, do I dowload entire list or pick one?
 

I'm new to linux as in less than 24 hours old. There is a basic assumption that no linux guide is addressing and a newbie like myself needs to know. When downloading software, there is always a list (not like in windows when it's just one). Now here is the basic question:

Do I download all the items or just pick one?

example when tried to downlaod wine, this list comes up:

Where did you get this list from? You would usually want to install rpms with .i386, .i586 etc. One with .src are source rpms and need to be compiled.
You would probably be wanting the second package in this case. You would also have to donload a package called libwine which is a dependancy of wine.

I wanted to add rh73 is RedHat 7.3 rh8 is RedHat 8...fc1 is Fedora Core 1, etc. wine-devel is for development. That looks like it came from a SourceForge download page.

I'm new to Linux myself, figured that out on my own, only been using it for about 2 weeks.

That was very helpful, I'm really lost. I don't even know what to do after I download-- yeah, that lost! Right now, I'm just trying to get all the stuff I need. I'm seriously thinking of taking a class, the books I have aren't very helpfull with installing software. :-( The just say, if you're feeling ambitious go for it and use rpm.

It feels hopeless, all the stuff I knew how to do in windows that I took for granted.... can't even figure out any p2p.

But no matter what, I'm not going back to crashing Windows and microsoft.

The only reason I still have a computer running Windows is because I am a gamer too, and some of my games would be heck setting up on Wine.

Anyway. I know what you mean. That's what this forum is here for afterall.

If you are using the gui...I figured out when I was logged in as root, that desktop for root is /root/desktop so I downloaded the RPMs to /root/desktop double clicked and the GUI interface to RPM did most of the work for me. Yeah I am lazy, but us newbies have to start somewhere right? The more familiar the better, that's why I use KDE.

I find the best way to learn is to experiment. I only found this website a month after I started using linux :cry: .

u should try to check out a program called yum or apt-get they will make searching and installing software a whole lot easier .

example : if u want to install wine in apt-get all u have to do is type apt-get install wine
thats it , it will download it from the net and install it for u and if it needs any other dependancy it will download it too ,
to make things easier there is a gui for it called synaptic.

as for p2p program the best one IMO is apollon as it will connect to gnutella , openft and kazaa

But now I can't find it. Where would it be? (if it indeed was sucessful) Is there a special place where all extracted or un-rmp-ed programs go? Like an unzipped folder in windows?

to MY knowledge, apt is ONLY used in the Debian distro. What distro are you using? to find where you d/lied stuff do a search in your home directory. That is where the stuff gets sent to. if you are root, go inside the /root/ folder(the little cute house on ur desktop)
If you are on Red hat or Mandrake, they utilize the rpm system. Mandrake also uses the more advanced urpm system. To learn how to use the rpm system read the RMP How to at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/RPM-HOWTO/index.html.
yeah, I KNOW, LInux IS a pain. Nothing is as easy as Windoze, ey?

Where did you download get-apt? I can't find it.:confused:
