tivo- similar linux recording software

Hey, anyone know of any good recording software, with a nice, optional gui, to replace vhs recording.
Looking to turn a 8-10 camera system (vhs) to record to a couple maxtor drives. Got a couple of old boxes, need some kind of inexpensive idea to the vhs - thought linux would be the answer.

Read about a tivo system, appeared to be linux box, guy replaced the drives with 120 gig maxtors and went from 30 hrs recording to 139 hrs recording.

I have two camera to recorder routing boxes with 4 switches each. The feed lines are coaxil cable. ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Need a solution to vhs cause the tape heads wear easily and begin to whine rediciously loud. No way to lube, shipping to be replaced is costly, company is reluctant to replace their product.

ANY suggestions welcome, please don't hold back. Be nice though as I am a newbie.

Thanks Cjae

try tivo itself. I think the source may be open and released. Otherwise, go for MythTv. It should do the job.

How to record TV with Linux

I am trying to do the same thing. Google for information on the web. Here's a useful site with lots of links to get you started:

http://www.exploits.org/v4l/

Here's what I've tried so far:

I bought a ATI TV Wonder VE (US$45 @ Best Buy), which seems to be okay-ish. I've run the following software:

- KnoppMyth,
- Knoppix > Configure > Configure Your TV Card, and
- xawtv on the base Mandrake 9.2 distribution

So far, xawtv seems to work the best: I can change channels, etc. MythTV (installed using KnoppMyth) kept wanting to download TV program listings from Zap2It.com before allowing me to change channels, but Zap2It no longer provides the required information. (And I don't get why the heck everything should grind to a halt just because the Zap2It web site is now revamped...) Knoppix itself wasn't able to properly configure my card; I'm sure it works fine in Europe in German.

All of this is only for watching TV, not for recording. There was some defunct program that stopped being supported 3 years ago --I can't remember what. And then there's DVR. That's what I'll be working on next when I get around to it. There are actual DVR RPM's for Mandrake, but they weren't signed properly, so I was a bit hesitant to install them without having a good backup system.

By the way, they say that you save a lot of headache if you get the Hauppage WinTV card (US$90). I was stingy. Maybe I should have gone for the more expensive card. ATI TV Wonder VE should work, though.

Hope that helps!

Where are you looking for the DVR rpms? If its at a PLF site, you may not have the PLF key on your keyring. I don't quite know how to get that fixed as I have not read it yet, but there is a faq on the plf site, I think. If from other places, I'd be a bit leery too.
