Boy, I've installed LM 17.3 xfce "live"(pendrive) and it is being a real b*^#*! Got a pleathora of problems, but will start with this. Installed ntp but it does not sync time. Tried to set manually, the time is correct in app, but won't snyc panel clock? Tried this : ntpdate pool.ntp.org and got this: 22 April 21:58:29 ntpdate [6799]: bind() fails: Permission denied Before I throw it off the 11th floor, maybe you know how to fix this malady? And, I'll be back, for there is a lot more to 'fix". NEVER had this much trouble with Linux/Ubuntu.

If ntpd is running you'll get a different message. Saying that ntpd is running. Some Linux error messages are useful Nevertheless, nptd must be stopped before you can run ntpdate. Is ntpd running anyway? What is the output of ntpq -p?
But ntpdate says permission denied. So was it run with sudo?
in gentoo i had to add ntp to one of the runlevels. as said you need to have the ntp daemon running. and than you need to wait a bit. It also depends if the network services are running and working. when you do not have internet working at bootup ntp easily fails on gentoo.
Well, it's solved. And, I'm embarrassed to say I'm not sure WHAT fixed it. All I know is that next day, it was 'synced". Don't tell me a "reboot" did the trick, for I tried that twice, before I "shut down" that evening. Maybe letting "rest" for awhile, or maybe something "locked" up with ntp and it took awhile to correct. Thing is....I just know it's working properly now. Sorry I don't have a 'definitive" answer.
