Thunderbird won't launch from launcher
 

I have a weird issue. I cannot get Thunderbird to launch from a launcher in Gnome. It runs fine from the command line, but not from the launcher. There are no error messages. Just won't run.

Any thoughts?

So what command is the launcher using? (Right click on the launcher to get this.)

I have a symlink in /usr/local/bincalled thunderbird. Like I said, it worked when I ran it from a command line. But then it stopped working from the command line. I have found the only way to get it to work after that is to delete my ~/.thunderbird directory and restart the program. Which, of course, loses any saved mail. I can't keep doing this. I did not have this problem with 0.2 under Windows. This is 0.3 under Linux.

have you tried to launch the executable directly? (usr/local/thunderbird/thunderbird or something like that)

Yes, I have tried to run it from the command line. It works there, but not the launcher. It DID work from the launcher, but only briefly and now not at all.

if i understood it, you've created a 'shortcut' (icon on desktop or in kicker menu) and made it execute symlink when you click on it. it executes /usr/local/bin/thunderbird symlink, right? what i mean was have you tried to change that so it executes the 'real' executable file (the one symlink was made from - /usr/local/thunderbird/thunderbird or similar)?

Yes, I have changed the launcher to point to the executable, too. Not working. It just does not want to run from the launcher.

UPDATE: I read this on the Thunderbird download page:

Note: Do not unzip Mozilla Thunderbird to a directory that already contains a previous version of Mozilla Thunderbird. Either delete the existing directory, move it out of the way or create a new directory. If you install Mozilla Thunderbird on top of an existing Mozilla Thunderbird or Mozilla directory you will have problems.

That is what I did, I think. I reinstalled Thunderbird. I tried it once, and it worked from the launcher. I closed the program, and waited a few minutes, ran it from the launcher again and nothing. It now won't even run from the command line.

Has anyone had similar problems with Thunderbird for Linux?

have you deleted symlink?might be that...

No, it won't run at all from even the executable.
