Thunderbird(smtp not working.)

I was playing around with firewalls. Mandrake, Speed Stream modem and others. Now I can't send mail with Thunderbird. I uninstalled all the firewall software, put all other settings back to where they where and even turned off the Modem firewall for now. Still nothing. My pop port is 110, my smtp one is 25. I can get mail fine, but I can't send it. How can I find, and where, the file or the like to see if port 25 is blocked at all. And how can I unblock it, etc.

Thanks

Can you post the exact error message? Does your ISP require SMTP authentication and if so have you enabled it?

I use both my ISP pop account and hotpop(free account.) Neither are working now. They worked fine before I played around with the firewalls. This is the message I am getting.

"Sending of message failed.

The message could not be sent because connecting to smtp server smtp.hotpop.com
failed. The server may be unavailable or refusing smtp connections. Please verify that you smtp server settings is correct and try again or contact you system administrator."

Ok I have not touched the smtp settings at all. The only thing I did, like I mentioned already, is that I played around with firewalls.

My smtp settings are this. I have smtp.hotpop.com for server name using port 25. I have my account name. Secure connection is no. I have user name and password checked.

Can anyone tell me which file I need to edit so I can get smtp working again? I am guessing that the firewalls changed something and when I uninstalled it it was never changed back.

Thunderbird(smtp not working.)

I stumbled upon this post as I was having the same problem. Managed to solve it today and since the solution is not mentioned here let me share this with you. Please do confirm if this happens in your case too.

For Thunderbird: Goto Tools --> Account Settings
(For mozilla mail: Goto Edit --> Mail and Newsgroup settings)

Select "Outgoing Server". There, below the "Server Name", there
is a checkbox for "Use name and password". That needs to be unchecked.
I did that and it's working fine now.

As long as it is checked, I am not being able to send mails (though I can receive them).

Hope this helps.

Same problem, not sure if right post

Hi guys,

I have sendmail + dovecot running on my system and I am on ubuntu. The problem is, when I also install smtpd to be able to send e-mail through an e-mail client like Thunderbird, I can send successfully but I can't get system messages. When I *don't* install it, I get the message at http://www.kunduz.org/~kabuto/images/smtperror.png but I can get system messages. What must I do to get it fully working?

Thanks in advance and regards,
