Thunderbird cannot connect to outlook

Hello! I have an Outlook and a Hotmail account and when i try to connect to them via Thunderbird i get a username or password is wrong error. On my windows pc it works fine, on Linux however it simply doesn't work. I have tried multiple distros and it's always the same problem. I have checked the IMAP and SMTP server setting and they are correct. It used to work some time ago but it suddenly stopped working.

I have tried both of these solutions in the past. However on both accounts i have connected by hitting the done button a bunch of times in a row. But now i have closed Thunderbird and opened it again and now it says that it cannot connect to imap-mail.outlook.com again.

POP, IMAP, and SMTP settings for Outlook.com

Here's mine from POP and IMAP settings in Outlook.com.
Code:
IMAP settings:
Server name: imap-mail.outlook.com
Port: 993
Encryption method: TLS
SMTP settings:
Code:
Server name: smtp-mail.outlook.com
Port: 587
Encryption method: STARTTLS
Good Luck.

Maybe your passwords aren't being saved in Thunderbird? Are you being prompted to re-enter the password?

follow everything exactly as it says.....

my wife uses it for school and i could never get it going due to typing in the wrong stuff. even though for other stuff it was perfect. found this and it worked many times. last time i skipped or did not carefully read and type the correct stuff and i too had issues until i noticed my error. now it works 100% of the time. beats having her to go to her schools web mail stuff.

hope this helps.

After some trying i managed to (hopefully permanently) fix the problem by using the following settings

Code:
IMAP settings:
Server name: outlook.com
Port: 993
Encryption method: TLS
Code:
SMTP settings:
Server name: outlook.com
Port: 587
Encryption method: STARTTLS
It is very weird because on my windows machine i use the suggested settings and they work just fine.

that is what i said -the university uses outlook 365 or some such thing where my other settings are different. yours may not have that 365 setting due to the server or the actual outlook service. glad you got it working. i struggled for years to get hers working.
