thunderbird can't find mail spool

I want to use thunderbird to read from my local mailbox, /var/mail/joe. I set up a Movemail account, but whenever I try to retrieve my mail, it says "Unable to locate mail spool file". In Tools->Account Settings->Server type, it says:
Server type: Unix Movemail
Server name: localhost
User name: joe
which looks correct. Any ideas?

I have a similar issue :

The mail is not on the local machine but on a server.
This server has a spool rep with permissions so I made a link like this :
ln -s /var/mail/myaccount /var/spool/mail/myaccount

then have the following config :
Server type: Unix Movemail
Server name: theserver
User name: myaccount

When I attempt to retreive my mails I still get this same message :
"Unable to locate mail spool file"

What is wrong this time ?
