Thunderbird and restoring mail

I am using Thunderbird and I backed up my mail directory under ~/example/.thunderbird/XXXX.default/Mail
I had to reinstall a newer Thunderbird because of some software issues and now I am having trouble restoring my old mail to the new thunderbird. I have tried to open saved messages and that doesnt work. Any suggestions?

copy that mail directory to ~/.thunderbird/XXX.default/Mail
Overwrite the fresh new blank directory.
