Thumb drive, the install app. Unetbootin's executable will not launch on Debian 4.0

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to read the following.

I am hoping to make a PNY brand, Attache model, USB 2.0, 16GB thumb drive boot the Fedora 10 Live ISO image. I have acquired the thumb stick and Fedora 10 is downloaded and sitting on a GNU/Linux Debian 4.0 etch partition, desktop computer. I'm mentioning my desktop distribution because it is within that environment that I encounter the problem.

Unetbootin -a USB thumb drive installation application- will not launch when I double-click on it's unetbootin-linux-307 executable off of Gnome's desktop. No error messages are visibly displayed. It is not launching minimized. I have used the following steps before arriving at this complication.

-The dependencies syslinux and p7zip-full were downloaded from the Debian repositories as specified by a Graphical Installation Using Unetbootin, on the official Unetbootin wiki page.

-unetbootin-linux-307 was downloaded from the Unetbootin Webpage and it's execute bit was changed from a terminal using chmod +x and alternatively, later, by Properties->Permissions tab and then checking "Execute." The file belongs to the same non-privileged user account trying to execute it. I have root privileges on this machine if that is needed.

In closing I want to comment that it feels to me as though I'm overlooking something that others breeze past with full comprehension. My knowledge of GNU/Linux is spotty and I appreciate the opportunity to have others look over the steps I've taken, I thank you in advance!

Now after following instructions for Unetbootin at the terminal, which indicated I should use chmod +x unetbootin-linux-* then ./unetbootin-linux-*, I receive the error Couldn't display "/home/user_name/Desktop/unetbootin-linux-307".

There seems to be no application associated with the file type when I look at Properties->Open With, the field reads No applications selected.

I realize that I did not go about asking for help in the best way. I could have been far more concise and to the point.

My process thus far-
-I've download Unetbootin, it came in the form of unetbootin-linux-307, a self-extracting sh file.

-I used the chmod command as follows from a terminal.

Code:
chmod +x unetbootin-linux-*
-I attempted to launch the self-extracting sh file, though it did not launch upon using the following.

Code:
./unetbootin-linux-*
My questions are-
-If necessary how could I go about checking to see if what I've downloaded is the true and uncorrupted file I need?
-How, as mentioned in the second post, could I associate with file unetbootin-linux-307 a command, application or otherwise launch that file?

Unetbootin documentation-
Universal Netboot Installer wiki
Unetbootin on wikipedia.org
LiveUSB installation thread
Hard disk installation thread

Unetbootin alternatives-
I would like to use Unetbootin but if unsuccessful some alternatives are concisely listed on the wiki page List of tools to create Live USB systems. Mention of some of these tools takes place in the threads unetbootin - more troubles and Downloading Linux to flash drive.
