Three-button-mouse is max?

I am just wondering if a mouse with three buttons is max (without that scroll-up and scroll-down counts as buttons)? Does Linux support a fourth and fifth (and so on) button? If not, is it the kernel that should take care of this?

x can cotrol them, using xmodmap and the ZAxisMapping option in your xorg.conf or XF86Config personally i've never had a use to use the 6th and 7th buttons on my mouse, but i do need to use "buttons" 4 and 5 for the scroll wheel.

Linux can handle all your buttons. But your applications probably can't. Yet, those "useless" buttons can be assigned actions or key-combinations.
