Third party regional font

Hi,
I am a complete newbie when it comes to fonts and artwork, so bear with me.

I know a group , who have bought a font, from a small firm of developers for typing in regional language (hindi).

The font works well under windows , but windows being subjected to so many malwares viruses and ransomwares as we know, I would like to use it on linux so I can lessen their woes.

The font is a truetype font called Yogini. When installed in linux , doesnt render phonetically (a for english a etc) even when the input source is hindi keyboard (Hindi Bolnagri). Some fonts like Lohit Devanagari , Gargi , etc work very well with the inbuilt ubuntu hindi keyboard , but my existing infrastructure is based on this third party font, so changing fonts wont do, and will be a big pain.

Can someone help me with this ? How does font rendering work phonetically in linux ? Is it related to your keyboard layout or the font itself ? How do i go about changing the font if needed via fontforge etc

Any help is appreciated.

It was difficult to tackle this one, as I don't have a Devanagari font to see what I'm doing, but I think you need to switch keyboard drivers. Deselect Hindi(Bolnagri) and then select Hindi(wx).

The keyboard driver converts the keycode produced by the keycode into the code for the desired character. All modern fonts will have the same code for each character: the question is which key is used to get it. There are different layouts for typing Devanagari, just as there are different layouts for Latin — a French keyboard has "q" where you have "a".

Hi DavidMcCann,

I have 3 keyboard layouts / drivers for Hindi -
Hindi bolnagri
Hindi kagapha phonetic
Hindi wx

I have tried all 3 layouts , but the font that gets printed/shown in the document is different from what we use , despite selecting "Yogini" font from the drop down box.

A thing to be noted is that the "Gargi" devanagri font when opened in font viewer shows no hindi symbols , but shows the english words - the quick brown fox etc ...
But when typing in hindi phonetic bolnagri it still renders in hindi symbols.

How is this possible ? Now im really puzzled how fonts are shown in a document and am full of queries.

A font is supposed to show Latin characters in the font viewer, because all fonts contain them and that's what the program is written to show. What happens if you create a document in Microsoft Word using Yogini and then import it into LibreOffice — does it show up properly? I don't like being baffled — I like to think of myself as a font expert!

Yes , a document in MS Office can be read in libreoffice with the Yogini Font , its just that I cannot continue to type / write to that document in that very font. It's really puzzling.

Are you sure that the font displayed in LO is really Yogini, or is it telling you it's Yogini and showing a different one?

If you give me an address from which I could download Yogini, I'll examine it.

It's Yogini because when I remove the font from the system, the document shows gibberish.

Can you pm me your email , I would be happy to mail the font to you with some screenshots.

Thanks.
