There MUST BE voice recognition!

Yesterday i got this bug in my head about how cool it would be if i had voice recognition in my system.
All i needed was a simple software that can turn specific predefined words into commands.
nothing more.
So i started googling around to see how it can happen and after a few hours of searching everywhere (including here) i realised that its probably currently impossible.

I was very disappointed, but then i realised: my mother's 2 YEAR OLD CELPHONE has voice recognition! so how can it be that i can't get similiar software to work on my top notch linux computer?!
There MUST be voice recognition out there!!!!

But i can't seem to find it...
I've looked at Xvoice and its based on that discontinued IBM crap that cannot be downloaded nor installed if i could ever find it.
I've also looked at cvoicecontrol but that just doesn't work.

All the info i find on the net seems to be very outdated, so....

any ideas?

thank you all!

Sphinx is just an engine so there aint much i can do with it

but that perlbox thing (which uses sphinx btw) seems like just the thing!
i've downloaded it and installed everything and the only problem is that when i try to run it it says
Code:
fopen: No such file or directory
meaning that my system is missing the command fopen (i think...).
so does anyone know how i can get it?
